Classical Women Composers

This Week —

Not every Classical music composer was some white dude sporting a powdered wig and a stiff upper lip; you’ve seen them in all the caricatures right? BUT, there are some phenomenal, fierce, and glamorous women composers out there in the classical music universe as well. It’s time we got to know them!

Listen to —

In this playlist you’ll listen to incredibly talented composers, such as Clara Schumann, she was a Renaissance woman, not to mention a celebrity pianist in Vienna. Florence Price, another notable composer, is considered the first black woman in the U.S. to both win recognition as a composer and have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra. Teresa Carreño was a celebrated Venezuelan pianist and composer, who played with great power and spirit. She gave her concert debut at the age of eight, and eventually performed at the White House for President Lincoln.
