Sound the Trumpet
This Week —
Let’s discuss the small but mighty trumpet. It’s like the MacGyver of instruments in that it can evoke so many emotions. It can make your heart, for example, practically leap out of your chest when hearing Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim”, or it can ease your troubles when you hear Dizzy Gillespie play “On the Sunny Side of the Street”(Pandemic? What pandemic?!). For our kids, the trumpet can be a fun and thrilling instrument to hear. If they’re curious and want to learn more, here’s an amazing video by one of the lead trumpeters of the London Philharmonia explaining how the trumpet is played.
Listen to —
This week’s playlist was made in collaboration with Liam Day, a trumpet player and music educator living in New York City. He’s also a brand new dad to 7 week-old baby Hudson! Liam started playing the trumpet at 11 years old in his school band. Wynton Marsalis is his absolute favorite trumpet player, and he recently released a new album entitled Siete Canciones Populares Españolas. We’re delighted to share some of his tunes on this playlist!
