Classical Women Pianists

This Week —
I started studying piano at 14 years old. I was never fantastic at it, but I love playing the piano nonetheless because of how forgiving it is. Unlike the violin—which squawks like a sick goose after I go without practicing for only a few days—the piano keeps my musical blunders to itself. It doesn’t hold grudges. No matter how I play, it simply whispers back: “I got you.”
Listen To —
This playlist is chock full of amazing women pianists who grace the stage these days. Starting with the legendary Martha Argerich from Argentina who is now arguably the world’s greatest pianist and will sell out concerts in minutes. Maria Joao Pires from Portugal, plays Mozart like no one has ever done. And from my home country Venezuela, Gabriela Montero who is known for improvising at her concerts which is quite unusual in the Classical Music world.
I’m Reading —
How Wendy Naughton makes an art show for kids "that feels like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, if Fred Rogers drank six cups of coffee, enrolled in art school, and entered a time machine”. A painter who literally can see one million colors. I took fifteen minutes for myself and made these cookies, a bite of heaven with only 3 ingredients. I did not share them and I’m not sorry. And my Elf spent a good 20 minutes watching this Charlie Chaplin clip on repeat 😊.recommend this wonderful children's book: Jazz ABZ by trumpet player Wynton Marsalis which celebrates the spirit of twenty-six stellar jazz performers - “A is for Almighty Louis Armstrong”. Another Marsalis gem is titled Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! - with infectious rhythm and rhyme, opens kids' ears to the sounds around us. This book relates all the noises and sounds around us to the sounds of the instruments in a jazz band.
Happy Playing!
